Wilson's Creek Battlefield Grows Larger

Wilson's Creek National Battlefield has grown by another 157 acres! News-Leader.com has more of the details, Wilson's Creek foundation to acquire 157 acres The Wilson's Creek National Battlefield Foundation on Thursday afternoon announced its acquisition of 157 acres for $921,200 from a developer to protect the Civil War battleground. The news came five months after Steve Redford, developer of the 2,000-acre Terrell Creek project just west of Wilson's Creek National Battlefield, offered to sell the adjacent 157 acres for $1.86 million. Following a Civil War soldier's diary, local historian Dan Plaster said he and fellow historian Joe Furtak have dug out scissors, boot spurs, buttons and square nails from the top four inches of soil on or near the land the foundation is buying. In both 2004 and 2005, the trust named Wilson's Creek as one of the nation's 10 most endangered Civil War battlefields, citing the adjacent Terrell Creek project. It is great that the developer was flexible and generous to help save this land. He is selling it at half the original asking price plus he donated an extra 16 acres! Too bad more developers aren't as generous to saving our nation's battlefields. More information on the Wilson's Creek National Battlefield can be found at the National Park Service's website If you wish to help support battlefield preservation please consider donating to the Civil War Preservation Trust. The CPWT has donated $50,000 to purchasing this land.
