Kyle Thompson's "From the Fields" CD
I just received my CD by Kyle Thompson as a donation to the Civil War Preservation Trust. From the Fields is just plain excellent. Kyle's songs are about the Civil War and it's battlefields in his own words and music. The best way to describe the music is folk that at times reminds the listener of Bruce Springsteen. There is definitely something special to Kyle's songs. There is an indescribable quality about them; a certain haunting melody and sadness that moves you. What is even more remarkable is the story behind the CD. Kyle was diagnosed with ALS, Lou Gehrig's disease. With the prognosis for the disease being terminal, Kyle decided to dedicated part of his remaining years to visiting the Civil War Battlefields he cared deeply about. He became inspired and outraged at the urban sprawl that was consuming the battlefields and decided to record his CD donating all the profits to the CWPT. He actually recorded his songs at Gettysburg, Antietam, Appomattox Court House, Fredericksburg, and Vicksburg. More about Kyle's story can be found the CWPT website. From the Fields can only be purchased from CWPT for $15.95 with all proceeds going to benefit Civil War Battlefield Preservation. Kyle's story is truly moving and should serve as an inspiration to use all.

[...] June 3, 2006Kyle Thomspon Revisited It has been 10+ months since I posted (Kyle Thompson's "From the Fields" CD and Just Plain Inspirational) about Kyle Thompson and his "From the Fields" CD. The main gist of the story is that Kyle was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease, but dedicated his remaining time to recording Civil War-inspired songs to raise money to preserve our Nation's battlefields. To date Kyle's CD has raised over a million dollars for the Civil War Preservation Trust and battlefield preservation.I received a comment from Kyle on my site as he stumbled upon it through Google. Kyle now has his own website up and running. You can find out more about Kyle and his story at Kyle Thompson. Kyle also has photos of his recording sessions for the CD as he traveled to each of the battlefields.I listened to Kyle's CD the other day and I am still impressed and inspired by it. I highly recommend it for those into the Civil War. As I posted previously, there is a haunting quality to some of Kyle's songs. Perhaps the most "haunting" of them all and my absolute favorite song on the CD is "Andersonville". You!…damn Yankee!!!… Stay clear of that line…A voice hollars…through the smoke of pitch pine…A shot rings out…another is dragged away…It don't matter, it happens everydayYou! Goddamn Yankees will feel my hate….And I will teach you!… about misery and hate…It don't matter how many of you I kill…so this I will…AndersonvilleThe $15.95 is money well spent with all proceeds going to the CWPT and battlefield preservation. "From the Fields" can only be ordered through the CWPT Store. Filed under Preservation, Music, CWPT, Kyle Thompson, Civil War, Civil War Music by Mike Koepke [...]
